milkbread: bakery & café from the owners of Kindred.
milkbread is the fast-casual little sibling of Kindred, the acclaimed Davidson, North Carolina restaurant from chef-owners Joe Kindred and Katy Kindred — the husband-and-wife duo behind some of the Carolinas' most celebrated tables. Chef Joe is a multi-year James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef: Southeast, and Kindred itself is recommended in the Michelin Guide, so when the Kindreds decided to turn their kitchen's obsessions into a fast-casual concept, it was an instant local hit. Named for the pillowy, tangzhong-style milk bread that made Kindred famous, Milkbread serves up premium made-to-order doughnuts and crispy fried chicken from a James Beard-nominated culinary team — no white tablecloth required.

milkbread is a family affair. We're Joe and Katy Kindred, a husband-and-wife restaurant team based in Davidson, North Carolina — just outside Charlotte — where we also run Kindred, our James Beard-nominated, Michelin Guide-recommended restaurant. milkbread started as the fast-casual sibling to Kindred, built around the same milk bread recipe that made our first restaurant famous, and it's grown into its own thing: premium donuts, crispy chicken, and a place we're proud to bring our own three kids.

We cook the way we'd want to eat: real ingredients, no shortcuts, nothing overthought. That means working closely with local farmers and boutique purveyors across the Carolinas to source what goes into every doughnut and every piece of chicken. Fast-casual doesn't mean lower standards to us — it just means the same care from Kindred's kitchen, served quicker and with just as much care.

We partner with local farmers, small-batch producers, and boutique purveyors who care as much about quality as we do — the same relationships that shape the menu at Kindred. Supporting our region's growers and makers isn't a marketing line for us; it's how we've always sourced, long before milkbread existed.
